Vintage Inspired
Maybe it's because it seems like a more romantic time, that time of lace and parasols and flirty fans. Whatever the reason many brides today are choosing vintage-inspired bridal wear.
We asked two New Hampshire shops that specialize in vintage style to create the look in a setting appropriate to the time, a grand hotel with elegance all around, the venerable Mt. Washington Hotel at the Omni Mt. Washington Resort in Bretton Woods.
Jay Philbrick, one of the state's premier wedding photographers, captured the images with his signature Vanity Fair-style photography. Hair stylist Tracy Hines researched and created the period hairstyles that complement the gowns.

Models (l. to r.) Kimberly Howe, Becky Marique and Kris Jarvis evoke the era with dresses from Lady of the Lake in Meredith. Kris wears a silk burnout tiered-hem tea-length dress and flounce jacket by Alex Evenings with a satin “Rose” purse. Her crystal beaded necklace is by Classico. Becky’s gown is a limited edition with handmade Battenburg lace and matching parasol. Her vintage-style earrings are by Anne Koplik. Kimberly’s hand-beaded silk gown and stole are by Scala. Swarovski crystal earrings complete the look. Hair and make-up by stylist Tracy Hines. Photo by Philbrick Photography.
With a stunning panoramic view of the Presidential Range in the White Mountains, the hotel was built with wide windows and long porches for enjoying it. Kris stands nearby in a floral silk velvet burnout gown with handkerchief hem and fringed stole by Simply Silk. The handcrafted rose quartz, freshwater pearl and sterling silver flower necklace is by Som’s Designs. She holds a pink satin rosette clutch. From Lady of the Lake. Photo by Philbrick Photography.
The hotel catered to wealthy guests from Boston, New York and Philadelphia, who arrived mostly by train. Becky sits in the great hall where they gathered to socialize in a romantic dress with a full layered chiffon skirt with Neo-classic tea-stained details over Soutache embroidery at the bustier. The hotel’s builder, Joseph Stickney, brought in 250 Italian artisans to work on the hotel before its opening in 1902. Evoking that gaslight era, Kimberly wears a stretch lace mermaid gown and beaded ruffle jacket set by Spencer Alexis. Her freshwater pearl and Swarovski crystal “tunic” necklace and earrings are by designer Glo Bullock of Wolfeboro. From Lady of the Lake. Photo by Philbrick Photography.
Many famous people — Thomas Edison, Babe Ruth and three presidents among them — have been guests at the hotel. Kris stands in the halls they walked dressed in an A-line with soft chiffon slits and flares with medieval corset-styled shaping and lacing at the back with three-quarter-length transparent sleeves. A conference of global significance — where the gold standard was set and the World Bank established — was held at the hotel in 1944. Kimberly stands near the Gold Room, where the historic documents were signed, in a dress with intricate Art Nouveau-inspired embroidery. The dress is an informal fusion of Victorian, Belle Epoque and modern Bohemian. From Enchanted Lace. Photo by Philbrick Photography.
Standing where families from the Gilded Age (the Astors and Vanderbilts, to name a few) once checked into the hotel for the entire summer, Becky wears a dress with an A-line silhouette, a V-neck blend of Victorian and southern elegance with detailed embroidery and appliqué on tulle with wing sleeves edged and scalloped.
