Fun, elegant and delicious — cupcakes just might be the perfect wedding dessert.

Put down the silverware and forget the plates — all you need to enjoy this fun and elegant dessert are your fingers. In the never-ending search for new and creative ways to personalize weddings, cupcakes have emerged as a popular (and delicious) trend.

“It's the new posh thing,” says pastry chef Kristy Stephens Ammann, owner of Soirée Cakery. “I think they're very pretty and trendy — they're sweet little bites.”

Ammann has made cupcakes of every kind, from minis to jumbo size, though she says the standard cupcake size is her preference.

“Cupcakes have really been exploding for us in the last couple of years,” says Susan Lozier Robert of Frederick's Pastries, who makes cupcakes for sale every day as well as for weddings.

Lozier Robert prefers the jumbo-sized cupcakes (pictured at right), though she's made everything from tiny cupcakes to cupcake/cake combinations.

Alternating larger cakes and cupcakes at different heights (as shown in the photos at left) is a great option. Not only is there the element of visual drama, but select guests can have cake while everyone else receives his or her own cupcake.

Big or small, fancy or casual, cupcakes give you the freedom to really express your personality. And, as Ammann points out, there's a fun factor — “Personally, I love the idea,” she says. “It's like getting your very own little treat.”
