I met Gary in 2002. We were both at a community meeting to discuss how to live in the world with less violence and fear and more grace and openness. Gary was 55 and I was 42 at that time. His strength, restraint and social passion drew me to him. He has this fantastic smile, too — just all of a sudden this twinkly smile is there and he lights up the world. Gary is a photographer and I was then working with at-risk youth, so I drew him in under the very valid condition that a few of my students wanted to do job shadows with a photographer. Those were great job shadows for the kids and the rest is history, as they say.
