Latest Dress Trends

Lace, open backs, romantic gowns, feather details and other hot looks for 2014.

Romance is in. Though tighter, more body-hugging styles like the mermaid, trumpet and sheath are still popular, soft, flowing romantic skirts are quickly gaining ground. These aren’t ball gowns — think ethereal, elegant and graceful dresses that are free-flowing. Details of flowers and petals, especially roses, are also influencing more designs and they’re often found in combination with this type of gown.

In addition to flowers and roses, feathers — or feather-like elements — are appearing both on the skirts of gowns and on boleros and other cover-ups. Feathers are often used in combination with detailed beading.

Pockets are here! For a while now more informal, shorter dresses have featured pockets (these are often sold as reception dresses), but now they’re beginning to show up on more formal gowns of all types.

Open backs are often found in combination with lace. Many dresses that have a more conservative neckline or sleeve give a glimpse of skin when it comes to the back of the gown. Keyhole and just entirely open backs are now widely available.

Boleros and detachable pieces are coming with more dresses. Brides are often choosing to cover their shoulders and upper arms for the ceremony, and then converting the dress once the evening and reception begin.
