Real Engagement: Love in the Lupines

Try our state's most famous flowers for your engagement shoot

New Hampshire has no shortage of beautiful scenery. But around this time of year, one of our Granite State landscapes lights up like no other: our White Mountain lupine fields. Last June, photographer Jennifer Halla watched the forecasts and made scouting trips to find the perfect day for a lupine engagement shoot for New Hampshire couple George and Kristina Dagher. The results were stunning — and photographer, bride, and groom all shared with BRIDE the story of how this gorgeous Sugar Hill shoot came to be.

From the Photographer: The inspiration for this session was the location. It had been on my bucket list to shoot in the lupines for a while, and when I pitched it to George and Kristina, they were just as excited as I was to shoot there! I loved everything about this session. In my opinion, the location is one of the most beautiful in New Hampshire.

The most difficult thing about this was scheduling. To find a good weather day and to work within the lupines' short blooming season (only a few weeks long!), we had to make time for it if we wanted it to work. We ended up traveling almost two hours up to Sugar Hill from Manchester on a Tuesday evening to do this session, and it was worth it! The couple was amazing to work with, and the location doesn't get any more romantic! We had so much fun.

From the Couple: George and I both attended college at Plymouth State University and started dating our senior year, in 2010. We fell in love up north, so we immediately knew that this was the area where we wanted go get married. Our wedding was on October 8, 2016, at the Mountain View Grand in Whitefield. This was the first venue we checked out, and we knew it was the one! So much so that instead of going with summer or fall of 2017 like we originally planned, we booked this date just seven months in advance because it happened to be available and it was our dream date. We both love the fall and knew it was going to be beautiful up north at that time.

When we told Jennifer about the location, she suggested we take our engagement pictures closer to that area that we all loved so much. She had heard about the lupines in Sugar Hill and always wanted to have an excuse to make the trip — this was the perfect opportunity!

From the Couple, cont.: George and I had been together at that time for more than six years and had never had professional pictures (or even good pictures in general) taken of us. We went into that day kind of awkward and uncertain of how we would look, because we are always goofy and can't stay serious.

Jennifer was so comfortable to be around, and with a few tips and letting us just act natural, she brought out a different side of us. By the middle of the session, we felt like professionals and we were having a blast! We all had so much fun laughing and adventuring off to different areas where the lupines and scenery were great.

Before the shoot, Jennifer monitored when the lupines were blooming best and at their peak in that area, and she even made a trip to check them out ahead of time. This is why we love her so much — she always goes above and beyond!
