Vendor Profile: Kristen Phelps Photography

To help you get to know some of the top-notch photographers, florists, and other vendors working in the New Hampshire wedding scene, we at Bride are implementing a new series of vendor profiles. In each profile, we'll give you a taste of the vendor's style and some examples of their work — from their wackiest wedding memories to their favorite photos.

Meet Portsmouth-based photographer Kristen Phelps. She founded Kristen Phelps Photography just three years ago but has already picked up wide acclaim, including Best of The Knot awards in 2015 and 2016. This is Phelps' first appearance in Bride, but we have a feeling you'll be seeing a lot more of her work soon.

NH MAGAZINE'S BRIDE: Where are you located? Where are you willing to travel to shoot?

KRISTEN PHELPS: I’m located in Portsmouth, NH, but will travel pretty much anywhere to shoot a wedding. My normal area of service is New England, but I will do destination weddings gladly!

NHMB: How would you describe your style of photography?

KP: My style is definitely a blend of fine art photography and photojournalism. I love to capture a mix of the candid and real moments but also love to do some guided posing. I aim to keep it all natural, relaxed, and unrehearsed.

NHMB: Who is your ideal client?

KP: The couples who are most grateful and appreciative of what everyone has had to do to make their day come together are the ones I love working with most. For me personally, they value me as their photographer and give me artistic freedom. I often say something like, “Now, I’m not sure if this will work but would you mind trying…,” and when they happily oblige with no questions asked, I couldn’t want more from a client. I guess the bottom line is that I feel most connected with my couples that are down to earth, willing, and kind.

NHMB: How and when did you get into this business?

KP: I shot my first wedding with no experience at 18 for a family member. From 18-22 I shot 1-2 weddings a year, and then when I graduated, I officially opened Kristen Phelps Photography in 2013.

NHMB: What is your favorite part of the wedding day to capture?

KP: I find enjoyment in shooting almost all parts of the wedding except cocktail hour (shout out to my dad who is my second shooter at most weddings and always does cocktail hour for me like a champ!).

My favorite part of the wedding day to capture is when I just have the couple to myself. I try my hardest to always shoot during golden light so it just adds to the happy and romantic vibe. It’s also important to take time away from the chaos of the reception and just spend time almost alone. Just taking steps away from the party, I can see their mood change, and it starts to sink in that they were just married.

NHMB: What is your favorite place to shoot in New Hampshire?

KP: I’d say my trademark shooting locations are open and overgrown fields. Luckily, there’s a lot of those types of fields in NH. I very much want to shoot on a windy mountaintop, so if anyone reading this has that same vision, give me a call!
